Its closeness to the South West Coastal Path almost guarantees that muddy-booted walkers will be found among the Tinners Arms’ clientele, enjoying the timelessness of its stone floors, low ceilings, cushioned settles, winter open fires and the revivifying Cornish real ales or Burrow Hill cider from Somerset. Built of granite in 1271 for masons working on ancient St Senara’s church next door (famous for its richly carved Mermaid Chair), many may welcome the fact that the only pub in the village has no TV, jukebox or fruit machine, nor can a mobile phone signal reach it. Based on ingredients from local suppliers, a winter supper menu offers moules marinière; grilled goats’ cheese and couscous salad; venison and chorizo stew, creamy mash and curly kale; and winter berry crumble with ice cream or custard. Sandwiches, ploughman’s and light meals are available at lunchtime. Outside is a peaceful garden and large terrace with sea views.
