The name of the inn derives from Als Yfferin, old Cornish for ‘Cliffs of Hell’, an appropriate description for this hazardous stretch of Atlantic coastline. Located high above Gunwalloe Fishing Cove, this 500-year-old, rugged stone inn commands an enviable position, with breathtaking views across Mount’s Bay. On sunny days grab a front bench and enjoy a pint of St Austell Tribute while looking out to St Michael’s Mount. The two interconnecting bars feature cosy log fires, fishing memorabilia, and watercolours of local scenes. The à la carte and daily changing specials utilise the best Cornish produce available, including fresh seafood. Everything is home made, with the likes of Cornish seafood chowder; and baked camembert with roasted garlic and redcurrant jelly among the starters. Main courses include white crab meat-stuffed chicken breast with creamy dill sauce; steak and ale pie; and rare-cooked pan-fried calves' liver, smoked bacon, creamed potatoes, onion tart and red wine sauce.
