This 450-year-old, creeper-smothered inn – the first licensed house in Wales - overlooks the sweeping Conwy estuary. The rambling, oak-beamed rooms are so full of careworn settles, log fires, military hats and historic cooking utensils that, mercifully perhaps, there’s no room for jukebox or pool table. Study the nicely balanced menu in the well-groomed bar over a leisurely Welsh Black beer from Llandudno’s Great Orme brewery, or one of the 8 wines by the glass. Start with grilled aubergine, feta cheese and olive salad; or seafood and shellfish chowder. Main dishes often have clear local provenance, such as Welsh lamb cutlets, root vegetable dauphinoise, wilted spinach, roast cherry tomatoes, redcurrant and rosemary gravy. Round things off with sweet pancake filled with melted ricotta and raspberries, topped with brandy butter. Luxurious accommodation is also available.
