This most imposing magpie inn commands Farndon’s High Street as it winds down to the ancient, haunted stone bridge across the River Dee, which forms the England/Wales border. Coaches stopped here en route between the Midlands and Holyhead; centuries of hospitality are continued in the contemporary, comfy interior, a relaxing mix of colour-washed walls and modern furnishings all warmed by a seasonal roaring fire. Cheshire beers such as Weetwood accompany an impressive menu – the chef’s deli platter; smoked haddock fishcakes with tomato salsa; braised ox cheek with bourguignon sauce; and Belgian waffle with rum and raisin ice cream are typical choices from the regularly changing fare. Five boutique guest bedrooms complete the picture.
