Pub group Brunning & Price care hugely about their properties, as is evident here. Named after local landowners, the Earls of Dysart, this classic village pub has open fires, lots of old oak, and properly filled bookcases – not just a random job lot from a jumble sale. Built in the mid-18th century, at one time it was simultaneously farmhouse, abattoir and pub; the abattoir was flattened by a German bomber returning home from a raid on Liverpool docks. Brunning's Original Bitter and Weetwood's Best Cask are likely to be on tap in the bar, with 18 wines by the glass. Around the bar are several dining areas, where starters include Thai crab cakes, and butternut squash tortellini; Greek pork patties are among the light bites; and main courses range from pan-fried trout fillets, to spiced black bean burger, by way of braised lamb shoulder. Views from the pretty garden take in two castles and the parish church.
