Behind this substantial, gabled old farmhouse, a long, grassy beer garden stretches to meadows fringing the Great Ouse Valley with its countless ponds and lakes. Tranquil territory in which to sup on a brace of renowned East Anglian real ales, supplemented each mid-summer by a beer festival. At the pub, known locally as The Offord Shoe, the modern, pan-European menu is changed every two months to allow chef-patron Richard Kennedy to utilise seasonal ingredients to the full. Graduate, perhaps, from Maryland-style crab cakes with English mustard mayonnaise to a main course of spiced venison meatballs, tomato and chipotle sauce and cheddar grits; or fried sea bream fillet, spicy lentils, crispy fried okra and coriander yogurt.
