Thatched 16th-century village inn with excellent food

At a glance

AA Pick of the Pubs
Bar menu

This pretty thatched pub was bought by the Hoskins family in 1964 and it has been serving good food ever since. Continuing that tradition are today's owners, Simon Cadge and Gerda Koedijk, while John Hoskins, a Master of Wine, compiles the wine list. There’s a large oak-beamed bar, serving pints of Brewster's Hophead and Digfield Ales Barnwell Bitter, while at the rear, the Garden Room surveys a sunny patio. There’s a set menu with two choices at each course; a selection of traditional classics such as home-made black pudding with mash, or steak and chips; or pick something from the à la carte, where roast pigeon with Puy lentils, Jerusalem artichokes and butternut squash; or chargrilled whole John Dory with chickpeas, grilled lemon and samphire might be followed by braised Scotch beef with horseradish mash, wilted greens, confit swede and bourguignon sauce; or pan-fried skate ballotine with saffron potatoes, braised leeks, tiger prawns and citrus dressing. Finish with the excellent cheese selection or damson cheesecake with plum sauce and toasted almonds.
