Bar menu
Open all year

A pub since 1784, it lies below Coombe Hill, second highest point in the Chilterns. It was named after a former owner of the nearby Chequers Estate, which is now better known for being the country retreat of the serving prime minister. Stripped beams, an open fire and a log-burner await the visitor ready for one of 17 wines by the glass, or maybe a pint of Tring brewery's Side Pocket for a Toad, an old Hertfordshire saying alluding to something useless. The menu follows the old 'keep it simple' business dictum, offering dishes along the lines of carrot and coriander soup; braised pork belly; traditional fish pie; pork sausages and mash; and pearl barley risotto.
