The Bell has a sign that reads ‘Dogs, children and muddy boots welcome’, thereby setting the friendly tone of a visit to this traditional country village pub. Physiotherapists caring for those with spinal injuries at nearby Stoke Mandeville hospital have been known to set The Bell as an objective for their newly mobile patients. The reward could be a pint of Wells Bombardier or Symonds cider, with a plate of fresh seasonal food. James Penlington has some star kitchens on his CV, so expect proper bar snacks and hearty full-flavoured meals – typical are crispy fried whitebait, harissa mayonnaise; walnut and goats’ cheese cheesecake, balsamic baby onions; pan-fried hake fillet, chickpea and tomato ragout with basil oil; and Orchard View Farm sausages, mash and onion gravy. Be sure to leave a corner for delicious desserts like fruity ‘spotted dick’ pudding with custard, or frozen mango parfait with coconut and lime biscuit.
