En route to Windsor Castle, Queen Victoria’s carriage was allegedly sometimes spotted outside this 400-year-old, flagstone-floored, low-ceilinged pub, while what the history books call ‘her faithful servant’ John Brown knocked a few back inside. The sheltered garden makes a fine spot to enjoy a Fuller’s real ale, a glass of wine and, for lunch, perhaps sausage and red onion marmalade ciabatta or a ploughman’s. For something more substantial try warm mackerel fillet, pickled winter vegetables and home-made guacamole, then lemon and thyme marinated corn-fed chicken breast, rustic ratatouille and dauphinoise potatoes.
