First licensed in 1835, Jago and Jane Hurt's 18th-century free house takes its name from the 1st Duke of Lancaster, son of King Edward III and local lord of the manor. Set back from the road, it's a matter of only yards to an ancient, double-arched packhorse bridge and ford across Potton Brook. Look for Paige, the Hurts' pet Staffie, making a cheeky appearance on the pub sign. Ale pump badges in the bar declare loyalty to Adnams and Woodforde's, with Aspall Harry Sparrow for real-cider drinkers. There's nothing too complicated on Jago's menus: chicken liver parfait with red onion marmalade and toast; pan-fried cod loin with cockles, smoked bacon, capers and new potatoes; pie of the day with hand-cut chips, braised red cabbage and roasted root vegetables; and grills. Open toasted sandwiches are served at lunchtime. Two roasts plus the regular menu on Sundays.
