An integral part of Woburn's attractive main street, this 18th-century former coaching inn – once one of 27 –reveals an elegant dining room, and a cosy bar lined with leather-upholstered settles. Seasonal menus offer Dorset chorizo with peppers, kale and free-range fried egg; sea bass and Bombay potatoes with Indian salad; slow-cooked blade of beef bourguignon with parsnip purée; and daily specials. It's Wednesday nights for grills, Thursdays for fish. The old coach yard is now a courtyard garden.
