Enjoying a prime position on the South Bank, close to the London Eye, Gillray's shows off its pride in all things English through diligently sourced top-notch produce. Peruse the list of 39 English gins or choose from one of the many inventive cocktails in the bar before heading into the somewhat masculine wood-panelled dining room. Crystal chandeliers, a long chesterfield sofa and views across to Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament make a fine setting for an unpretentious patriotic menu. Instead of bread comes a generous Yorkshire pudding filled with English cheddar and horseradish crème fraîche. You might then choose plump, rich Devonshire crab cakes with mustard and dill mayonnaise. For the main event, steaks - 35-day-aged Aberdeen Angus no less - are obviously the big draw: perhaps you might go for a perfectly cooked 260g rib-eye with red wine and bone marrow sauce, baked bone marrow and truffled chips, Standards don't slip at dessert - a zingy lemon meringue pie on a buttery pastry base provides a delightful finish.
