The George

213 Strand, LONDON, WC2R 1AP

Facing the Royal Courts of Justice, The George was built as a coffee house in 1723, although the black-and-white façade is late Victorian. Once regulars included Horace Walpole and Samuel Johnson, today mingle with judges, barristers and court reporters over a pint of Sharp's Doom Bar, a lunchtime salad, an open sandwich or hot wrap. For something more substantial, try chargrilled rib-eye steak; smoked poached haddock with bubble-and-squeak; traditional Irish lamb stew with dumplings; or the roast carvery.
