You needn't miss out on the piste this year because we're in a recession – save cash by skiing closer to home, in Scotland, or travel by car to one of Europe's best ski resorts.

If you want to venture farther afield you can avoid the hassle and expense of flying, as many of Europe's best ski resorts are accessible by car. Val D'Isère in France, Klingenthal in Germany, and Klosters in Switzerland are around nine hours' drive from Calais, while Chamonix is eight. Andorra in the Pyrenees, between France and Spain, is roughly 11 hours away.

Here's our pick of some of the best ski resorts throughout Europe, as well as motoring advice for snowy conditions if you're travelling by car.
