Burlington House, Piccadilly, LONDON, W1J 0BD

Write a review

Known principally for international loan exhibitions, the Royal Academy of Arts was founded in 1768 and is Britain's oldest Fine Arts institution. Two of its founding principles were to provide a free school and to mount an annual exhibition open to all artists of distinguished merit, now known as the Summer Exhibition. The Royal Academy's most prized possession, Michelangelo's Tondo, 'The Virgin and Child with the Infant St John', one of only four marble sculptures by the artist outside Italy, is on permanent display in the Sackler Wing. Exhibitions for 2013 include Manet, George Bellows, Mexican art (1910-1940) and Australia.
