Driving Abroad

Car insurance cover for driving abroad

As an AA Car Insurance policyholder, you can benefit from extended cover while driving your car in many European countries. Our cover allows you to drive anywhere in the EU, and in several other European countries, with the level of cover you enjoy in the UK for a total of 90 days (during the 12 months of your policy).

Countries you are covered for

Your cover extends to member countries of the European Union:

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.

You are also covered for the following non-EU countries:

Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, Croatia and Liechtenstein.

Documents for driving abroad

If you're planning to drive in Europe it's important to take the right documents with you in case you have an accident.

If you are travelling in the EU you should take your Certificate of Motor Insurance. Your certificate provides details of your insurance cover, which you'll need to provide if you have an accident.

To help you while you're driving in Europe we've produced a multi-lingual leaflet which explains how your Certificate of Motor Insurance applies in the countries listed above.

When you're driving in the European countries listed above you can use your Certificate of Motor Insurance and our leaflet instead of a Green Card. The Green Card (or International Motor Insurance Card) is an internationally recognised document which indicates that, as the holder, you have the minimum insurance cover required by law in the country you are visiting. You do not need a green card for driving in the EU, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, Croatia or Liechtenstein.

Travelling further afield

If you're taking your car to a country which isn't listed above you'll need to let us know in advance. If your insurer will cover you for that destination a green card can be issued at a fee to be advised. Please contact us on 08705 33 22 11.

Longer trips and business travel abroad

If you are planning to take your car to Europe for more than 90 days you should let us know in advance, so we can advise you on the premium that will apply for extending your cover. You should also let us know if you are planning to use your car for business travel abroad. Please contact us on 08705 33 22 11.

Breakdown cover

For real peace of mind while driving abroad it's worth arranging breakdown cover before you go. AA European Breakdown Cover provides 24-hour English speaking telephone assistance while you're motoring in Europe.

If you're looking for car insurance with a good level of cover for European driving you could find the policy benefits you need with AA Car Insurance.
