Frequently asked questions

Answers to common queries about AA Car Insurance

About car insurance

Who underwrites AA Car Insurance?

The underwriter is the person who looks at the risk of insuring you and who works out how much you should pay for your insurance. We find the best car insurance deal for you by comparing quotes from our hand-picked group of insurers. The insurer who gives you the best value for money on your car insurance will be your underwriter.

Do AA members get a discount on car insurance?

Let us know that are an AA member when you get a quote online. You could get a discount when you insure your car with us for the first time.

What is a protected no-claims discount?

A no-claims discount is a reward for not making a claim on your motor insurance policy. Your no-claims discount will normally go down at your next renewal after a claim if your insurance company cannot get their money back from the person responsible or you can't get the money back you had to pay out of your own pocket.

You can pay up to 15% more for your car insurance to protect your no-claims discount so that you can make two of these 'non-recoverable' claims in a three- or five-year period without getting less no-claims discount.

What is the AA Uninsured Driver Promise?

If you make a claim following an accident that is not your fault, and the driver of the other vehicle is not insured, you will not lose your no-claims discount or have to pay any excess.

We just ask you to tell us the other vehicle's make, model and valid registration number.

What is a policy excess?

An excess is the part of the costs of a claim for loss or damage to your car that you have to pay out of your own pocket. Your insurance will be cheaper if you agree to pay more of these costs yourself. There are two types of policy excess:

Compulsory excess – the insurer will decide how much you'll be asked to pay for each claim before you buy the motor insurance policy. Check that you are comfortable with how much you'll have to pay for each claim before you buy a car insurance policy.

Voluntary excess – the amount you'd be prepared to pay on top of the compulsory amount. The higher you go, the lower your premium.

Can I pay a voluntary excess?

Yes, you can pay less for your car insurance if you agree to pay some of the cost of any claim for loss of or damage to your car.

What is a Thatcham security device?

The Motor Insurance Repair Research Centre tests car security products for insurers. It's better known as 'Thatcham' after the Berkshire town where it's based. Most insurers like these products and give you discounts if you get them for your car.

What is a tracking device?

The police can track a stolen car with an electronic signal sent by this bit of kit hidden in the car. Most cars that have this are found after they are stolen. You can pay up to 10% less for your motor insurance if your car has a tracking device.

About your payment

Can I spread my payments and pay by monthly instalments?

Yes, we do offer the option to pay by monthly instalments on most quotes.

If you choose to pay by monthly instalments, we'll ask you to make an initial payment by debit or credit card. The balance will then be payable over 11 monthly instalments by direct debit.

How secure is my online payment?

You want to keep your personal details and your credit or debit card information private and secure when you buy online. We give you this security by using secure server software that encrypts any information you give us online. It takes the characters you enter and converts them into a secret code, which is then securely sent to us.

AA Car Insurance gives you cover for up to 90 days in the EU

Driving abroad

Car insurance cover for driving abroad

As an AA Car Insurance policyholder you can drive anywhere in the EU, and in several other European countries, with the cover you enjoy in the UK, for up to 90 days during the 12 months of your policy.

Countries where you are covered

Your car insurance cover is valid in all European Union countries:

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.

You are also insured for driving abroad in these non-EU countries:

Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, Croatia and Liechtenstein.

Documents for driving abroad

Are you planning to drive in Europe? Make sure you take the right documents with you in case you have an accident.

You should take your Certificate of Motor Insurance if you travel in the EU. This provides details of your insurance cover that you'll need to provide if you have an accident.

You can get an explanation of how your Certificate of Motor Insurance applies in the countries we mentioned above in our multi-lingual leaflet. You'll find this helpful while driving abroad.

Download our multi-lingual European driving leaflet

You can use your Certificate of Motor Insurance and our leaflet instead of a Green Card when you're driving abroad in the countries listed above. The Green Card (or International Motor Insurance Card) is an internationally recognised document that shows that you have the minimum insurance cover needed by law in the country you are visiting. You do not need a green card for driving in these countries:

Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

Travelling further afield

You'll need to tell us if you’re taking your car to a country that isn’t listed above. You can get a Green Card if your insurer will cover you for that country, but you may have to pay a fee for this. Please call  us on 0844 412 4684.

You may need to prove that you have car insurance, not just at the border but for example after an accident. That's why taking a Green Card or Certificate of Motor Insurance and leaflet with you anyway could be handy while driving abroad in these countries.

Longer trips and business travel abroad

Are you planning to take your car to Europe for more than 90 days? You should let us know in advance, so that we can tell you how much it will cost to get extra insurance cover. You should also let us know if you’re planning to use your car for business travel abroad. Please call us on 0844 412 4684.

Breakdown cover

Arrange breakdown cover before you go if you want real peace of mind while driving abroad. AA European Breakdown Cover has a 24-hour English-speaking telephone helpline for when you're driving in Europe.
