Almost two thirds (62%) of AA members are planning to take a summer holiday this year involving driving a car either in the UK or abroad. Of those, half (49%) of our members surveyed will be taking a holiday in the UK involving driving.
To support these drivers and the optimistic third of British drivers who say they always holiday in the UK, rain or shine*, the AA is organising a series of special summer events, competitions and offers designed to give British motorists their best summer ever – whatever the weather.
Touring in a camper van is among the top three UK holidays for AA members, alongside narrow boats and historic castles.
Buy AA breakdown cover and you'll automatically be entered into a prize draw to win 1 of 3 brand-new VW California camper vans**.
Those who are already AA members can also be in with a chance of winning. Simply register with AA Rewards, or sign in, and enter online.
As part of our Summer Saviours campaign, we're also offering all our members a free summer car check. We've teamed up with National Tyres and Autocare to give members a free visual safety inspection by a skilled technician. Find out more.
When you join the AA between 4 June to 15 July, you'll receive a year's free onward travel cover if you buy roadside plus national recovery.
Bearing in mind the average cost of car rental over 3 days is £148, you'll also have peace of mind knowing that we'll keep you moving if your car needs to be repaired. However, if you break down without cover, you won't be eligible for this offer.
A quarter of people (24%) say that because the weather was so much better last summer they are more optimistic about the weather and so are more likely to holiday in the UK this year. This rose to a third (31%) amongst young people (18-24), which perhaps indicates youthful optimism and a greater desire to save money than older people.
Young people (11%) are also the most likely to be considering a holiday in the UK because of the World Cup. People in Scotland are the least likely to say the World Cup will make them holiday here (6%); those in London and the West Midlands were the most likely (10%).
Out on the roads this summer it is looking like it may be very busy with 38% of drivers saying they think they will be driving more in the UK this summer than last. And half of people (50%) say the good weather last year means they will be more likely to be taking more day trips and short breaks this summer.
One of five 'flower power' AA vans
To help keep the nation’s spirits high this summer, five AA patrols will be cheering up the roads by swapping their regular AA vans for limited edition 'Flower Power' AA vans.
Patrols driving these vans, decorated in a customised livery, throughout the summer will serve members in Scotland, Northern England, Midlands, Wales, South West, and South East.
Members who spot the vans and let the AA know, via Twitter or retweet mentions of the vans, will be entered into a draw to win 1 of 5 pairs of tickets for horseracing at Glorious Goodwood.
Wherever you are in the UK you are no more than two hours by car from the coast and with AA breakdown patrols covering the whole of the UK, no matter where you are the AA will have you covered.
Chris Jansen, AA chief executive, said: “We estimate that a record number of 20 million drivers will be hitting the roads in their cars as part of their summer holidays, both at home and abroad.
“This year we want to help everyone have a great summer, rain or shine. We know that half of our members are planning to take a driving holiday in the UK; others will drive abroad or take lots of day trips and get out and about enjoying everything that we have to offer here.
We’re here to help make this summer the best yet even if it’s just by raising a smile by seeing one of our flower power patrol vans, or trying to win a campervan. Our patrols will be out in force from Glasgow to Glastonbury and Goodwood to ensure all drivers have a great summer

“To allow people to make the most of these plans they need to be prepared and that’s where the AA can be their summer saviour. We are encouraging all drivers to ensure they don’t suffer a summer breakdown by being prepared and having AA cover. We will also be offering free car checks for AA members.
