Description
Tucked away down a quiet lane (take heed of the directions as it is easily missed), this delightful, sympathetically converted Victorian farmhouse sits on the banks of the Trent. Smartly refurbished and fashionably attired, quality reigns supreme, from the restaurant's high-backed leather seats to the spacious tables and first-class tableware - complete with the chef-patron's monogrammed signature. The lounge offers champagne and oysters, and after-dinner relaxing. Exposed beams, veneered flagstone floors, a jazz backing track and expressionist modern art all conspire to create a smooth, classy and restrained backdrop for some flamboyant cooking. Service is delightfully friendly, with genuine warmth and knowledge and passion about both food and wine, while Sat Bains' culinary odyssey is not to be missed - this is modern cooking on the edge from a highly-skilled pioneer. Abruptly scripted dish descriptions and combinations stretch the imagination and dazzle with a host of innovative techniques, textures and bright, fresh flavours that explore the palate and sensations, delivering bold, distinctive, precise, delightfully balanced and imaginative cooking of such calibre that the tasting menu or surprise offering (including wine tasting options) are almost a requisite. So expect the carte to deliver the likes of Cornish brill served with parsley root, oxtail, lettuce, capers, cockscomb and red wine jus, or perhaps pigeon with carrot, feta, melon, chocolate and grapefruit, while 'textures of pear' - with almond, caramel and vanilla - might catch the eye at dessert. This is a rare style of cooking, something out-of-the-ordinary, new and exciting, so hang on for the ride, or perhaps stay overnight in one of the attractively presented bedrooms to recover from the culinary sojourn.

The menu was truly inspirational containing flavours and combinations I had never tried before. Each course exhibited expert skills and precision, executed perfectly. I tried the tasting menu with the accompanying wine list. Too much wine in my opinion and therefore very surprised by the above comment. Service was slick and attentive and the atmosphere surprisingly warm and casual for a restaurant of this calibre.

Ultimate dining experience. Tasting menu one to go for. At the start we were even given 2 special bottles each to 'down in 1' just to prepare our digestive system. There was a prawn dish with an atomiser to spray on the prawn as you eat it. True you could have 3 meals in Notts for the price of this but given the choice I would forego 3 meals elsewhere for one meal like this one. Service was great too - cannot understand the comments by CB - Michelin and AA cannot be wrong.
