Now in its 22nd year, Silverstone Classic is firmly established as the world’s biggest classic motor-racing festival. This year’s event will celebrate a wide range of motoring and motor club anniversaries, as well as playing host to a number of motoring firsts.
From touring cars to Triumph Spitfires, and from Cosworths to AC Cobras, here’s a round-up of what’s new, and what’s being celebrated, at Silverstone Classic this year.
The event will witness a world-record gathering of more than 60 Ferrari F40s – believed by many to be Ferrari’s finest creation. Introduced in 1987, the F40 was the first road-legal production car to break the 200 mph barrier, with a top speed of 201.4 mph.
Also turning 25 this year, the Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth will feature in the spotlight in the new Touring Car Trophy grid. This iconic turbo-charged winged car caused a sensation both on and off the track, winning countless national and international race and rally titles, and can be seen even today competing at many lower-level events.
Many car clubs choose Silverstone Classic to celebrate special milestones in model, marque or club histories. This year sees a number of British sports cars turn 50, including the Lotus Elan, the Triumph Spitfire, and the AC Cobra.
The event has also been selected by the MGB50 Committee as one of just three official celebrations to mark 50 years of the much-loved classic roadster MG MGB.
This year’s Silverstone Classic will host the UK’s first-ever BMW Z-fest to mark the 60th birthday celebrations of the official BMW Car Club GB. This inaugural event will see hundreds of BMW’s popular Z1, Z3, Z4 and Z8 sports cars on display, as well as participating in a special parade lap on the full Silverstone Grand Prix circuit.
Other car clubs celebrating their 60th anniversary this year include the Mercedes-Benz Club and the Renault Owners Club. Meanwhile, the British sports car Austin-Healey, in production between 1952 and 1972, also reaches its 60th year.
