Create the perfect Christmas look

Top table-dressing tips, from Villeroy & Boch

Deck the halls and give your Christmas some added sparkle this year, with Villeroy & Boch’s top tips on setting the scene for your yuletide celebrations.

Whether your chosen look is vintage chic, simple elegance or full-on festive cheer, you’ll impress your friends with a stunningly dressed table that’s bang on-trend and will have you celebrating Christmas in style.

Choose your colours

Begin by choosing the key colours you want to use. Try to stick to only two, or at the most, three, colours – the look should be stylish yet understated.

A colour wheel can help you check which shades complement and contrast, and can be really useful for picking out an accent colour.

Mix, match and make do

You’ll be surprised at what you can find around the house that will add to your themed look and help to brighten things up.

  • Add some glitz to your table, mantelpiece or tree with bright and colourful costume jewellery
  • If you don't have a large enough tablecloth, a single white bed sheet, starched and pressed to a crisp finish, works just as well
  • A pashmina scarf makes a great table runner – and the contrast of colours and textures looks superb

Set the scene

Choose one stand-out piece for each place setting – a boldly patterned charger works well as a colourful focal point, and really gives your table the wow-factor.

Collect some stemmed glasses and place them upside-down, with one decorative bauble underneath and another on top. Group them in clusters around the centre of the table for an eye-catching festive arrangement.

Place a jug of iced water on the table, and add a slice of lemon, lime or orange to inject some colour.

Keep it simple

Christmas doesn’t have to be gaudy. If your overall Christmas décor is bright and colourful, provide a simple contrast by choosing an understated colour palette for the table.

Don't over-complicate your table-setting – avoid cluttering the table, and leave plenty of room for your guests to move freely.

White roses, with bright green sprigs of pine needles, make for a truly elegant table centrepiece – or try a simple white wicker basket filled with baubles.
