Not sure where to start? Here’s what to look out for when buying a used car…

Do your research

Narrowing your choice down to a few makes and models can help you with your search.

Decide on the most suitable fuel type for your needs, read up on car reviews, and check the prices of similar cars.

It pays to budget carefully

Calculate how much you can afford to spend – taking into account the
trade-in value of your current car, if you’re selling as well.

Don’t forget to factor in all the likely running costs – including insurance, annual road tax, and fuel consumption.

Make the most of the test drive

Ask the right questions

Make sure you take someone with you to the dealer or seller – it’s always worth getting a second opinion.

Ask about any mechanical, history and mileage checks, and the number and type of previous owners. Has the car been modified or repaired after an accident?

If the deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is – don’t forget, you can always walk away.
