The AA enjoyed a special day out with two winning members on Sunday 7 October, at the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship (BTCC), at Silverstone race track.
AA members John and Will were treated to an exciting VIP hospitality experience by WSR, who run three BMW 320s for the eBay Motors team. They had a fantastic time cheering on the team’s drivers Rob Collard, Nick Foster, and Tom Onslow-Cole during the day’s three BTCC races.
Our lucky winners enjoyed behind-the-scenes race action at the event, with a tour of the pit garages, exclusive access to the grid walk, and the chance to chat to the eBay Motors drivers, engineers and team principal. They were even treated to breakfast on arrival, and a three-course lunch.
Behind-the-scenes access for our winners
We had the chance to catch up with driver Rob Collard, for a quick Q&A session in between races. Here’s what he had to say.
What prompted you to pursue a racing career?
My father was in racing, so I grew up with it, really. I’ve been around cars all my life – it’s in my blood.
If you hadn’t become a top touring car driver, what career would you have chosen?
Something else that gets the adrenaline pumping! I’m really into motorbikes, so perhaps that – or maybe I’d have become a top triathlete!
Any personal motoring ambitions?
It’s got to be that classic, Route 66 – preferably on an old Harley Davidson!
Which is your favourite car you've owned?
I’d say my current BMW X6 is a definite favourite – it’s a fantastic drive.
How's your parking?
I think I can claim to parallel park with the best of them!
What do you enjoy listening to while you drive?
Recently I’ve been listening to Coldplay, The Wanted, Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Script.
Who is your greatest inspiration?
Other than my father, I’d say Colin McRae. He did so much for British motorsport.
Any top tips you’d give to aspiring racing drivers?
Short and simple – never give up.
John: 'It was brilliant – definitely the most enjoyable racing experience I’ve had. Great food and company, and very well organised.'
Will: 'A once-in-a-lifetime experience – I’ve learned so much about the sport, and it was great to see what goes on behind the scenes. A very enjoyable day!'
