The Park Restaurant

4-5 St Peters Grove, Bootham, YORK, YO30 6AQ

3 rosettes

Adam Jackson may have been here for less than two years but this smartly refurbished conservatory-style restaurant, part of a Victorian townhouse hotel not far from the city centre, has already made a name for itself as somewhere to find sharp contemporary cooking. An intimate space, it is only open for dinner, allowing everyone involved to concentrate on delivering the ambitious menu exactly as the chef intends. It's a friendly and informal setting, while still having an air of switched-on professionalism. The eight-course tasting menu changes regularly and Jackson, a Yorkshireman born and bred, makes the very best use of the wonderful produce available in this neck of the woods. You can take the menu either with or without the suggested wine pairings, and there is no flowery verbiage on the menu - descriptions, in fact, are quite terse - 'mushrooms, sorrel, gnocchi', for example, is followed by beetroot, salmon, apple, and then a main course of duck, foie gras, artichoke and hazelnut. Never fear, however - you're in safe hands with a thoughtful, imaginative chef who knows exactly what he's doing as he guides you on a journey of taste, texture and aroma.
