Lamb & Lion Inn

2-4 High Petergate, YORK, YO1 7EH

2 rosettes

Seamlessly grafted into the ancient city walls of medieval York, its beer garden overlooked by the Minster, the Lamb and Lion makes a good fist of pleasing all comers, young and old, locals and visitors. As well as a traditional wood-panelled pub, it boasts a small parlour dining room of great character, with a high ceiling, open fire, carriage lanterns and seating on pews. The undisputed classic of the kitchen is a steak pie to be proud of, and Sunday roasts are a reliable draw too, offering topside or pork loin with Yorkshires and proper stock-pan gravy. Elsewhere, things get a trifle more cosmopolitan, with starters of red mullet on crab and coriander risotto, or crackled pork belly in cider vinegar caramel. Then comes coley fillet on paella, or a satisfying presentation of pot-roasted duck breast with herbed pommes Anna, braised red cabbage and a multitude of cherries. To finish, there's crème brûlée, given an old-English touch with quince, rhubarb fool with lemon biscotti, or white chocolate cheesecake in bourbon syrup.
