Built on the spot where the notorious Mr Fawkes was born, and in the shadow of York's magnificent Minster, the inn is steeped in history. Although recently restored and spruced up with style, the fine old inn retains many original features, including roaring log fires, a timber staircase, wooden floors, gas lighting and intimate nooks and crannies, and there's a real buzz about the place. Expect a traditional approach to British cooking and a monthly-changing menu that focuses on classic dishes cooked well using great local produce. Typically, start with pressed terrine of Yorkshire gammon with fruit chutney and mustard seed dressing, then follow with roast pork belly with home-made black pudding and apple mash, and finish with dark chocolate flan with sultana sorbet.
