The Greene Oak probably couldn't be greener if it tried: the exterior of the pub is painted green, and inside the theme continues, with pale green banquettes and chairs, green legs on chunky wooden tables, green panels on some of the walls and splashes of green in the patterned cushions and blinds. It all makes for a very fresh and vibrant look, which is reflected in the waiting staff who are as cheery and welcoming as they come. The modern pub food takes its influences from Europe and beyond, and relies on top-notch, seasonal British ingredients. The carte is supplemented by a daily-changing set menu at lunchtime and some blackboard specials, the latter possibly bringing forth breaded beef rib fingers with braised red cabbage to start: an unusual dish with good textural contrast (moist, tender beef, crispy coating) and great flavour. Main course could be as simple as a sea-fresh roast skate wing with fat-cut chips, seasonal greens and caper and butter sauce, while dessert could end on a fruity note with warm spiced poached plums sitting atop a nicely made pear and almond tart.
