Sir Christopher Wren Hotel and Spa

Thames Street, WINDSOR, SL4 1PX

1 rosettes

Sir Christopher Wren is reputed to have overseen the completion of Windsor's Guildhall and to have worked on the Castle's State Rooms, and is honoured here by this Thames-side hotel consisting of several buildings clustered around a cobbled street. In the restaurant, where large windows and mirrors allow diners to enjoy the river traffic, the menu is an appealingly varied slate of contemporary ideas. Starters take in perfectly cooked scallops complemented by spicy tomato salsa and a balsamic reduction, accompanied by pea shoots, as well as a duo of duck terrine (foie gras and leg) with spiced plums and Grand Marnier dressing. To follow there might be lamb noisette in a herby broth with braised baby gem and fondant potato, or darne of salmon with marinated peppers, aubergine and courgette, lime-mashed potatoes and salsa verde. End with an attractive-looking pudding like a trio of pannacottas (vanilla, chocolate and strawberry).
