Thames Street, WINDSOR, SL4 1PX
Right next to Eton Bridge, with the river flowing past, there's no quibbling about the name of the Thames View Restaurant - it's a peach of a position, and the windows are expansive enough to give everyone a view. The man himself - Sir Christopher - had connections to Windsor but didn't design the hotel, but that's not to say it isn't a handsome and characterful building, and there's even room for spa and leisure facilities. The restaurant is smart and comfortable, with linen-clad tables and a menu that follows a modern British path. Start with ham hock and foie gras terrine with spiced plums and sakura cress, or oak-smoked salmon with capers, shallots and lemon, before a main course such as sea bass with crab and saffron risotto, confit fennel and saffron cream sauce. To finish, dark chocolate truffle torte with raspberry sorbet hits the spot.
