Lindeth Howe Country House Hotel & Restaurant

Lindeth Drive, Longtail Hill, WINDERMERE, LA23 3JF

2 rosettes

Beatrix Potter not only lived in this classic country house on a hillside overlooking Windermere and the mountains, but wrote some of her tales here. To be fair, the word 'hillside' undersells what are in fact six acres of sweeping gardens, worth exploring before eating in the handsome dining room. Here, a modern British menu of contemporary and creative dishes offers smoked applewood twice-baked cheese soufflé with pickled pear and caramel hazelnuts, followed by pan-fried duck breast and confit leg, apricots, pak choi, spicy carrot purée and potato gratin. Finish with chocolate and orange tart, white chocolate cookies and Kendal mint cake sorbet from the mouth-watering dessert selection.
