Visitors to the ruined 13th-century abbey at Whitby, note that a mere five miles outside the town is the petite fishing village of Runswick Bay, where overlooking said bay from a windy perch is the Cliffemount. Indeed, the bluster off the sea is about as turbulent as things get in this sublimely peaceful spot, and the plainly decorated dining room enjoys the best of the views. The cooking keeps things reasonably simple but very effective. A large glass plate bearing a starter of grilled mackerel caught in the bay, with curried mussels and spring onion, makes the point eloquently, or there could be pork and apricot terrine with cranberry-clementine chutney. Fish is just as strong a suit at main, perhaps for well-timed hake with a croquette of brown shrimps in scampi bisque, while meat may be Gressingham duck breast with butternut purée and dauphinois. Mulled plums are a delightful accompaniment to warm orange cake and vanilla ice cream, while local cheeses come with home-made Cheddar biscuits and Black Sheep ale cake.
