Perched on the cliffs overlooking Runswick Bay, the hotel is blissfully insulated from almost any other sound but the distant plashing of waves below. That imperious view can be enjoyed from the Pasión dining room, where light boutique styling meets a country-pub approach to menu construction, with the day's specials chalked up on the board. Seafood is a particular lure, from crab spring rolls in sesame dressing, or roast mackerel with Yorkshire Blue rarebit and a salad of marinated apricot and red onion, to mains such as sea trout on brown shrimp and spring onion risotto. Homely dishes such as steak-and-ale pie and mash (made with Black Sheep ale) dispel any sense of pretentiousness, and that local beef might also appear roasted with a Yorkshire pudding and potatoes done in duck fat.
