The Wellington

High Street, WELWYN, AL6 9LZ

1 rosettes

Going strong since 1352, The Wellington, on Welwyn's pretty high street, is an old coaching inn which takes a contemporary approach to the business of hospitality. A makeover a few years ago has opened up the place, seen the addition of some rather cool bedrooms, and put the focus firmly on the gastro side of the pub spectrum. It looks good with its rustic-chic exposed brick walls, real fires and bar stocked with proper beers. The menu keeps things simple and unpretentious, so you might choose to tuck into a hearty beef and Wellington ale pie. If you're up for the full works, however, you might start with crispy duck and hoi sin dumpling, or go for one of the daily specials such as crab and tarragon bonbons with samphire, radish, cucumber and tarragon oil. Next up, a fillet burger, fish pie, or something a little more adventurous such as braised ox cheek with an oxtail lollipop.
