Ancient Gate House Hotel

20 Sadler Street, WELLS, BA5 2SE

1 rosettes

Ancient the hotel certainly is; the building even incorporates the 15th-century Great West Gate, once part of the city's defensive walls. The Rugantino Restaurant looks the part too, with its large brick fireplace and ceiling beams. While it may look like something from England's yesteryear, its menu is resolutely Italian, with the kitchen focusing on quality ingredients and producing commendably unfussy dishes. Properly made risotto is a good way to start, perhaps with crab, smoked salmon and scallops, or wild mushrooms and parmesan, and there could also be classic carpaccio. Home-made pasta is a speciality - rigatoni with meatballs stuffed with dolcelatte, say - or follow with rump of lamb, served pink, successfully combined with lamb tortellini, minted pea purée and a rosemary and fennel jus. Puddings fly the flag with lightly textured vanilla pannacotta with fruit compôte, and plum and Amaretto semi-fredo with first-rate cantucci.
