Paul and Dee Gilmore upped sticks from Birmingham in 2003, having always rather fancied the idea of running a farmhouse restaurant out in the country. And here they are, off the A522 in the peaceful village of Beamhurst near Uttoxeter, As farmhouses go, it's on the grandish scale, with luxuriant foliage climbing over the front, an attractive garden, and a restaurant operation that extends informally across a set of ground-floor rooms. The menu format is fixed-price for anything from two to five courses at dinner. Assuming you won't want to miss out on anything, the five will take you perhaps from a grilled salmon sausage with peas in crab bisque, through an intermediate salad of scallops, bacon and wild mushrooms dressed in blackcurrant butter, or boozy fruit sorbet if you prefer, to a main course of roasted locally shot partridge with braised cabbage and potato gratin. After farmhouse British cheeses with celery and chutney, things come to a supremely satisfying close via warm treacle tart in caramel chocolate sauce.
