King John Inn

2 rosettes

You might expect a Victorian country inn on the Wiltshire-Dorset border to be a good bet for hearty English food built on a bedrock of game and local produce, and the King John obliges. The chef is there all the way from field to plate, shooting most of the game himself, and it's all served up in a country-chic setting with quarry tile floors and a solid oak bar. Local chalk stream trout is fresh enough to turn up as sashimi with soy sauce and wasabi, while venison haunch of outstanding quality comes with green beets, carrots and bacon. The wine list is a real corker too.
