Description
There's been no resting on their laurels for owners Geoffrey and Katherine Smeddle since they took over this 300-year-old coaching inn with a recent history as one of Scotland's top dining destinations. Pleasingly the restaurant with rooms continues to go from strength to strength. A comfortable lounge, decorated in an elegant country style, is dominated by a large log fire and leads through to 3 intimate dining rooms. Reflecting the natural setting, the rooms are painted in muted colours with fresh flowers adorning the linen-clad tables. Produce comes from small local suppliers wherever possible and, with Geoffrey at the helm in the kitchen, ingredients are imaginatively paired and balanced to bring out the maximum depth and flavour. The visual impact of the food is stunning, as in a mosaic of rabbit, sweetbreads and confit duck perfectly pointed by accompanying pickled mushrooms and spiced walnuts. Perfect timing and high quality produce is evident in a John Dory main course, with fricassée of shellfish and white beans, potato gnocchi and mushroom purée. An accurately cooked mango soufflé with yogurt sorbet provides a confident close.
