The Pear Tree at Purton

Church End, PURTON, Swindon, SN5 4ED

2 rosettes

It may sound like a humble pub, but this former Cotswold-stone vicarage on the edge of an old Saxon village is actually a country-house hotel with fabulous grounds which include a flower meadow, wetlands and a vineyard (three of their wines are on offer in the restaurant). Having reached a landmark 25 years here, owners Francis and Anne Young have made their mark and the hotel has lots to offer, from comfortable rooms to conference and wedding facilities, and the Conservatory Restaurant with its pleasing garden views and ambitious, gently modern menus. Smooth duck liver parfait is served as a first course with brioche and cauliflower pickle, followed perhaps by breast of wood pigeon in red wine flavoured with juniper and black treacle. A fish main course might be paupiettes of lemon sole served with a salmon and lemongrass mousseline and vegetable spaghetti, and among desserts, lemon and basil cheesecake with limoncello ice cream hits the spot.
