The Harrow at Little Bedwyn

Description

Secreted away down winding country lanes in the hamlet of Little Bedwyn, what was once the village pub is now a classy country restaurant of some note. The dining room - split into two sections - is bright and contemporary, featuring dark leather high-backed chairs and neatly dressed tables laid with Riedel glasses and colourful Villeroy & Boch crockery. Service, led by Sue Jones, is friendly and relaxed, and husband Roger mans the stove. There's also a small garden at the rear for summer alfresco dining and aperitifs. Roger's approach in the kitchen is equally modern, with great emphasis on the freshness and sourcing of quality ingredients. Fish is caught on day boats landed at Brixham, while meat and game is from specialist farmers and butchers (perhaps 28-day hung Aberdeen Angus from Moray or new season Norfolk woodcock), and salads and herbs are specifically grown in North Devon. Roger's cooking style is thus intelligently straightforward, allowing ingredients to shine with clean-cut flavours. Subtle new Asian flavours are also in evidence on the repertoire, as in a fabulous tranche of sea bass on aubergine and peppers with Asian spices and cauliflower purée. The stunning wine list displays plenty of passion and high quality, and the introduction of two wine options alongside the gourmet tasting menu gives diners even greater chance to explore one of the finest wine lists in the UK.

Absolutely divine meal, elegant restaurant, excellent service. Proper welcome. We had wild salmon, very delicate. Venison with black pudding was scrumptious, very rich. The bread and butter pudding, had intense grown up flavours. It is a small, intimate restaurant, but you get no sense of being crowded or hurried. The Harrow is a real gem, we have already booked dinner, looking forward to a proper delve into what looks like a very good and well priced wine list.

Imaginative amuse bouches precede magnificent foie gras/scallops/black pudding with PX reduction - foie gras better than Gordon's, smoother and less gamey. Perfect Welsh Black fillet, potato cake with the right amount of horseradish. Turbot had delicate wild mushrooms and mash. Cheese clock face from creamy chevre to powerful Epoisse. Great wine list that left wallet untroubled: big California Viognier, peppery Oz Shiraz. Care and imagination from enthusiastic, unstuffy team. Highly recommended!

Visited with 2 friends with whom I regularly visit restaurants in this area. This is undoubtedly the best we have visited in this area. All 3 courses, meat and fish, and the canapes, were delicious. The wines are above average price but the Pinot-Noir we chose was of a very good quality. In addition, the service was good and the atmosphere warm and friendly. I will be recommending this restaurant to my friends and colleagues and might even take my wife to it.
