The George of Stamford

71 St Martins, STAMFORD, PE9 2LB

1 rosettes

History seeps from the pores of every mellow stone of this venerable coaching inn, which once fed and watered passengers on the Great North Road. The oak-panelled restaurant is a magnificent room with an old-world feel, and its menus are steadfastly traditional too: trolleys do the rounds to deliver the signature dish of roast sirloin of English beef, carved at the table. But it's not all heritage dining, for there are also king prawn tempura with lime and coriander salsa, followed by breadcrumbed rose veal cutlet in sage and lemon butter with avocado salad and potatoes forestière. Traditional sticky toffee is a good closing bet.
