The George in Rye

It may have a venerable history, having taken root on this spot back in 1575, but The George is not stuck in the past. It's a smart and stylish boutique hotel that blends period features with contemporary good taste, and offers brasserie-style dining in The George Grill. There's no old-school stuffiness here. The menu is equally of the moment, featuring lots of local produce and making good use of the kitchen's charcoal grill. Start with salt and pepper squid with a home-made green chilli and coriander mayonnaise, but it's hard to skip the Rye Bay scallops (with cauliflower purée and vegetables à la grecque, perhaps). Main-course oven-baked cod has a soft herb crust and accompanying tomato fondue, or go for Romney March lamb or rib-eye steak. For dessert you could try a baked vanilla rice pudding with berry compôte and almond biscotti.
