The Elephant at Pangbourne

Church Road, PANGBOURNE, RG8 7AR

1 rosettes

Echoes of the old British Empire are found at The Elephant, now a boutique hotel, with oriental rugs, Indian furniture and Eastern artefacts littered about. There are two eating options: the bar, with a separate menu (expect upmarket pub food, from sandwiches to cheese and onion omelette with fries, or roast duck breast with a port jus, Savoy cabbage and fondant potato) and the restaurant. The menu here makes a few nods to fashion - a salad of chorizo, potato and tomato for pan-fried salmon steak, for instance - and follows a contemporary line of sound ideas. Game terrine with beetroot and apple chutney can vie for attention with a smoked haddock and salmon parcel with oriental salad and hoi sin dip, preceding venison steak with redcurrant jus, dauphinoise and kale. Puddings have included pear and almond tart with pear sorbet and caramel sauce, and passionfruit crème brûlée.
