The Elephant at Pangbourne

Church Road, PANGBOURNE, RG8 7AR

1 rosettes

The Elephant at Pangbourne is housed in a building that dates from the Victorian era, and so the interior designers have drawn inspiration from that period; here Indian artefacts, oriental rugs and colourful fabrics recall the reach of the British Empire (naturally, elephants are represented in various forms). It's very much a 'boutique' hotel, with a smart-casual finish and dining options to suit your mood: eat in the bar (BaBar) with its bistro attitude, or opt for the roomy Christoph's restaurant. Here the menu sticks mainly to British and European ideas, with twice-baked organic Godminster cheddar soufflé rising to the occasion, followed by 21-day aged sirloin steak (cooked just right) with traditional accompaniments, but there's an Asian twist here and there in the likes of tempura prawns with wasabi mayonnaise. Finish with a good looking (and fine tasting) dark chocolate truffle torte with a punchy blood orange sorbet.
