This striking, bare timber and galvanised steel building lies in the grounds of Chapel Down Winery, one of England's leading winemakers. Both bar and terrace offer countryside views, while from the open-plan kitchen comes a short but appealing choice of modern European dishes, such as a starter of octopus carpaccio, chorizo, puréed red pepper and smoked almonds. In similar vein are gilt head bream with cucumber consommé and herb gnocchi, and barbecued lamb rump served with wild garlic, morels and boulangère potatoes. Coconut pannacotta with kiwi sorbet and mango would be a fine way to finish. Why not tour the vineyard, before enjoying its wine?
