Built by Thomas Telford's chief engineer, Georgian Hadley Park is looking pretty sharp after a £1.5 million redevelopment in 2010. Set in three acres of mature grounds, it feels as if you are out in tranquil countryside, yet the house is just a few minutes from the bustle of modern Telford. Dorrells Restaurant is an attractive, light-flooded conservatory venue with well-spaced, linen-clad tables on darkwood floors tended by friendly, clued-up staff. The kitchen takes regionality to heart, sourcing the bulk of its materials from within a 50-mile radius, and its uncomplicated modern menus are driven by the seasons. Start, perhaps, with ham hock terrine with pear chutney and grilled ciabatta, followed by roast rump of lamb with seared liver, dauphinoise potato and balsamic onions. For pudding, the finest Valrhona chocolate is the basis of a délice served with seared mango and chocolate sorbet.
