The Willow Tree Restaurant

3 Tower Lane, Off Tower Street, TAUNTON, TA1 4AR

2 rosettes

Chef-patron Darren Sherlock's intimate restaurant occupies a beamed 17th-century house in the heart of town. Locally reared meats and fish from Newlyn's day boats produce starters such as smoked haddock and leek tartlet with a slow-cooked truffled egg yolk and parsley dressing before mains that give those pedigree meats and fish star billing, whether it's pan-fried monkfish and scallops with 'linguine' of carrot and celeriac, home-made tarragon pasta and creamy lobster sauce, or roast rump of lamb with pommes Anna, ratatouille-style vegetables and black olive jus. Baking skills are evident in excellent home-made breads, and thought and workmanship are behind even straightforward-sounding desserts like bread-and-butter pudding with vanilla ice cream.
