Stonefield Castle Hotel

TARBERT, Loch Fyne, PA29 6YJ

1 rosettes

Finely detailed down to the last crenallation, Stonefield is a hubristic piece of Victorian pastiche, a medieval-effect castle sitting high on the Kintyre peninsula. The décor inside matches the exterior grandiosity, and the views over the water from the wide-screen picture windows in the dining room are a rare old treat. The cooking keeps things relatively simple, opening with a serving of langoustines with shallot and caper hollandaise, and following up with beef in three guises - medallion, burger and mini-pie - served with cauliflower purée strongly spiked with Lanark Blue, all sauced with port, or lobster glazed in Arran mustard and Mull cheddar. Finish with apple, toffee and almond tart with apple syrup and cinnamon ice cream.
