The imposing white building on the edge of the Stour was once a working watermill, as witness the millpond opposite and the glassed-in waterwheel that forms a focal point in the dining room. Views of the landscapes hereabouts once inspired Thomas Gainsborough, and make for a relaxing setting for the modern British food on offer. Start simply with seasonal asparagus in hollandaise with a poached egg and cumined pistachio crumb, before mains bring on blackened sea bass on spicy salsa with wilted greens, or a textbook grilled rib eye in peppercorn sauce. Memorable desserts include rich chocolate and cherry marquise, or strawberry semifreddo with pistachio biscotti.
