The Porch House

Digbeth Street, STOW-ON-THE-WOLD, GL54 1BN

2 rosettes

Claiming to be the oldest inn in England, the original building has been dated to AD 947, although a 21st-century refurbishment has matched its undoubted period charm. The bar is stocked with real ales, while the restaurant turns out some impressive modern British dishes. Twice-baked cheddar soufflé with leeks in grain mustard sauce packs a good flavour punch, followed by Cotswold lamb rump served with Jerusalem artichokes and green beans in a light lamb jus. Among desserts there might be rich chocolate mousse served warm with a sharp counterpoint of raspberry sorbet. There are sandwiches and sharing boards, too, alongside bar staples like grilled pork chops and sirloin steaks.
