The Hoop

High Street, STOCK, CM4 9BD

1 rosettes

The building was converted to an ale house some 450 years ago and remains in that line of business to this day. The wooden-boarded Hoop has an atmospheric pub on the ground floor - acres of beams, draught ales at the bar - and an upstairs restaurant that is opened up to the rafters to create a slightly more refined setting amid the exposed oak. The kitchen turns out modern food that wouldn't look out of place on the menu of a thrusting big-city brasserie. Chickpea fritters, for example, as a starter with dukkah spice, pomegranate and mango yogurt, or pheasant tempura with a game gravy to dip them into. Main courses might deliver brined belly of pork with seared scallops and winter cabbage, or slow-roasted Creedy Carver duck leg with black pudding and smoked sausage. Finish with bread-and-butter pudding with candied orange and white chocolate ice cream.
