The Hoop

High Street, STOCK, CM4 9BD

1 rosettes

Over 450 years old, The Hoop is on two levels, a ground-floor bar dispensing real ales with a small fireplace and the real ambience of a country pub, and the upstairs Oak Room restaurant, with a beamed ceiling, bare wooden tables and prints on the walls. The lively menu focuses on modern British flavours, which translates into starters of ham knuckle and guinea fowl terrine with pickled vegetables, and seared scallops with a salt-cod beignet and cauliflower purée. Dishes are well composed so individual components add up to a satisfying whole: a well-timed fillet of John Dory on creamed potatoes surrounded by a ragout of tomato and plump mussels, and pork belly and fillet with a sauce of caramel, vanilla and apple served with pancetta, roast shallots and a potato croquette.
