With room only for a couple of dozen diners at a time, Loch Bay is a diminutive institution around these parts, a place of simplicity and integrity, and its position right by the loch shore, in a row of 18th-century fishermen's cottages, is a magical one. Under new ownership this year, it now offers traditional Scots cooking with a French accent. Start with mussel and oatmeal soup, or ox tongue and black pudding with celeriac remoulade, as preludes to classic fish-packed bourride, or Glendale venison with ceps and cocoa gravy. A clootie dumpling and whisky cream ends things on a high.
