The Moat House

Lower Penkridge Road, Acton Trussell, STAFFORD, ST17 0RJ

2 rosettes

This Grade II listed moated manor house dating back to the 14th century has a lovely waterside location; diners in the Conservatory Restaurant get to watch the narrow boats wend their way along the canal from the comfort of their linen-clad tables, where candles flicker in the evening. The hotel competes in the wedding and business markets, while its restaurant is a hit for its ambitious contemporary cooking. The presence of a tasting menu nails their ambition to the mast (there's a veggie one too), with matching wines available if you wish to go the whole hog. From the à la carte, start with a decidedly modish Jerusalem artichoke velouté with caper and sultana purée, cauliflower beignet and micro coriander, before moving on to a flavoursome slow-cooked blade of beef with Savoy cabbage and bacon, creamed potatoes, chestnut mushrooms, glazed shallots and Guinness sauce. The creative thinking continues at dessert stage, too: banana and caramel parfait, perhaps, with toffee popcorn and bitter chocolate sorbet.
